Tongues of Fire-Pastor Paul's Podcast-Episode #49-On the Way Again

The Inner Confusion

An inner breakdown has taken place according to an international thinker: 'It is manifest that the breakdown in international comity is not solely due to economic and political causes.' The breakdown is due to a breakdown in something back behind the economic and the political-a breakdown in the spiritual. Something has collapsed there, and the outer collapse is simply an outer expression of a more serious inner collapse. The outer arrangements of men are awry becuse the inner arrangements of men are awry. For the whole of the outer arrangements of life rests upon the inner. Men cannot get along with each other because they cannot get along with themselves and they cannot get along with themselves because they cannot get along with God.

An appalling sense that you are not on the Way is a sense of 'not-well being'. Something is missing. You are feeling out of joint with reality, or not sustained or backed-disconnected or separated-outside the Great Design of life. You cannot advance in life with any buoyancy, that bounce in your step, unless you are on the Way. Our souls need cleansing and reconciliation washing away all fear, doubt, guilt and uncertainty. 1

Love the Lord with your all your heart, mind and soul; and Love your neighbor as yourself. The Law of Love insures Universal backing without separation.

Tongues of Fire Pastor Paul's Podcast-Episode #48-The Christian Way is the Way

Christian

This name for the followers of Christ occurs only 3 times in the New Testament: Acts 11:26, Acts 26:28, I Peter 4:16. The only definite information about its origin is the statement in the first of these passages, that 'the disciples were called Christians for the first time in Antioch'. The name does not seem to be used by Christians themselves until the middle of the 2nd century AD and even then it is used chiefly by apologists writing for pagan readers.

The Roman historian Tacitus says that it was used by the populace in Rome in the time of Nero (Annals, XV,44.3). In the important MS of the New Testament, the Codex Vaticanus, the spelling Chrestian(os) is found in all three passages, and the same spelling is common in early inscriptions. This points to a derivation, not from Christos, but from Chrestos, which is presumably the common Greek adj. chrestos, 'good', 'kindly', regarded as a proper name. (The ending -ianos, which is Latin rather than Greek in origin, does not seem to have been used except in formations from proper names;cf. in the New Testament itself Herodianoi, Mark 3:6 etc.)

The two names were at this time pronounced in almost the same way. Christians sometimes accepted this implied derivation without remark, but they can scarcely have invented it for themselves. It is therefore probable that the name was originally invented and used by non-christians.1

Tongues of Fire-Pastor Paul's Podcast-Episode 47-Pride Pt 2

Introduction to
THE PSALMS

Authorship, Date and Background: The book of Psalms has followed the tradition of the Septuagint for its name. Literally, the Greek rendering Psalmoi means 'song to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument.' The Hebrew title for the book is Tehillim, which means 'praise songs.' Psalms contains 150 chapters or psalms and has been divided into five segments, each one ending with a doxology-As follows:
  1. (1-4)
  2. (42-72)
  3. (73-89)
  4. (90-106)
  5. (107-150)
The date and authorship of this book is unique in that some of the authors are known and others are not, and the dates for composition of the various psalms range from Moses to the period of the exile and shortly thereafter, from ca 1400 to 500 B.C. Seventy three of them are ascribed to David, two to Solomon, one each to Ethan and Heman, one to Moses, and twenty-three to Levitical clans of Asaph, leaving forty-nine psalms whose authors cannot be ascertained.

Modern scholars have challenged the Davidic authorship of a number of the psalms attributed to him and have opted for a late dating of virtually all of the psalms. Interestingly, this is inconsistent, because some of the instructions for the singing of the psalms were written in a language that had already become untranslatable in the sixth century B.C.

Characteristics and Content: The psalms vary widely in their purposes. Scholars have noted eight different categories of psalms:
  1. Personal psalms
  2. prayer psalms
  3. liturgical psalms
  4. historical psalms
  5. praise psalms
  6. penitential psalms
  7. Messianic psalms
  8. psalms which exalt the majesty and might of God. Some psalms fit neatly into a category, while others fit into several categories.1
Psalm 20
A liturgy for the king
A. Prayer for victory

To the leader. A Psalm of David

The Lord answer you in the day of trouble!
The name of the God of Jacob protect you!
May he send you help from the sanctuary,
and give you support from Zion.
May he remember all your offerings,
and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices.
May he grant you your heart's desire,
and fulfill all your plans.
May we shout for joy over your victory,
and in the name of our God set up our banners.
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.

B. Assurance of divine help

Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories by his right hand.
Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses,
but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God.
They will collapse and fall,
but we shall rise and stand upright.
Give victory to the king, O Lord;
answer us when we call.

Tongues of Fire-Pastor Paul's Podcast-Episode #46-Pride

Pride
'Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.' Proverbs 16:18

A distinctive feature of biblical religion is its teaching about pride and its converse, humility; this is unparalleled in other religions and ethical systems. According to the Bible (and to the classical Christian moral teaching), pride is the very root and essence of sin. Sinfulness consists essentially in the rebellious pride which attributes to self the honor and glory that are due to God. Pride was the sin of Adam. Boasting, and the pride which trusts in oneself or in any human prince or army, are constantly contrasted with the true humility which trusts in God alone.

Christ agrees with John the Baptist in condemning pride of race (Luke 3:8, Matthew 8:10). He likewise condemns the pride of the Pharisees-spiritual pride which resulted in ostentation (Matthew 6:5, 23:5, Luke 18:9) and all forms of social pride (Matthew 23:6, Luke 14:7). To his followers, he used the example of the humility of children, and said they should refuse titles of honor (Matthew 23:8-10) and positions of privilege (Mark 10:35-45). The washing of the disciples feet was the perfect symbol of his life of lowliness (John 13). More by Christ's life and deeds than by his words, he introduced a new virtue-Christian humility-into the world.

St Paul perceived the theological significance of the lowliness of the Son of God in his incarnation: he who was in the form of God emptied himself and humbled himself (Philippians 2:6-8): he who was rich became poor for our sake (II Corinthians 8:9, 13:4). The wonder of the divine humility is revealed in the manger at Bethlehem. Paul, a converted Pharisee, constantly warns us against spiritual pride (I Corinthians 4:6); neither Jew nor Gentile has grounds for boasting (Romans 2-3). The Christian may boast of one thing and one thing only-the cross of Jesus Christ; for the rest, he will be content to glory in his weaknesses, out of which through the power of Christ he is made strong ( II Corinthians 11-12-13). 1

Tongues of Fire-Pastor Paul's Podcast-Episode #45-Steadfast

Jesus
III The things that shall be Revelation 4.1-22.5
A. The heavenly worship Revelation 4:1-11

4 After this I looked, and there in heaven a door stood open! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this." 2At once I was in the spirit, and there in heaven stood a throne, with one seated on the throne! 3And the one seated there looks like jasper and carnelian, and around the throne is a rainbow that looks like an emerald. 4Around the throne are twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones are twenty-four elders dressed in white robes, with golden crowns on their heads. 5Coming from the throne are flashes of lightening, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and in front of the throne burn seven flaming torches, which are the seven spirits of God; 6and in front of the throne there is something like a sea of glass, like crystal.
Around the throne, and on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with a face like a human face, and the fourth living creature like a flying eagle. 8And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and inside. Day and night without ceasing they sing,
"Holy, holy, holy the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come."
9And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10the twenty-four elders fall before the one who is seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing,
11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."

B. Prelude to the seven seals:
the scroll opened and the Lamb adored Revelation 5::1-14

5 Then I saw in the right hand of the one sealed on the throne a scroll written on the inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals; 2and I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?" 3And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it. 4And I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or look into it. 5Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals."
6 Then I saw between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders a Lamb standing as if it had been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7He went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne. 8When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9They sing a new song:
"You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slaughtered and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and people and nation; 10 you have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God, and they will reign on earth."
11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12singing with full voice,
"Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!"
13Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing,
"To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!"
14And the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Tongues of Fire-Pastor Paul's Podcast-Episode 44-To Gain

Saul (Paul)
'His call and conversion on the Damascus road' Acts 9:1-19

9(1)Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest (2)and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. (3)Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. (4)He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul why do you persecute me?" (5)He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. (6)But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." (7)The men who were traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one. (8)Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him to Damascus. (9)For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
His Baptism by Ananias
(10)Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." He answered, "Here I am, Lord." (11)The Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, (12)and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight." (13)But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; (14)and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name." (15)But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; (16)I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name." (17)So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." (18)And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, (19)and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
